Atelier Mai Al Moataz emerged from a place of passion and personal exploration, starting with one part-time tailor in a home-based setup. Established in 2018 in Bahrain, our initial offering included Qamis Pantalon sets and other modest pieces, sheer linen bishts, oversized dresses, and kaftans adorned with tassels and mother of pearl buttons. Our exceptional detailing and finishing were (and still are) so meticulous that some of the garments could mistakenly be worn inside out.
The atelier quickly evolved from a small online shop into a bespoke service, driven by custom orders from friends and family who became loyal clients. The pandemic accelerated our growth, increasing demand for comfortable yet distinctive clothing. We needed to upgrade.
Seeking deeper meaning beyond contemporary fashion's superficiality, we delved into traditional crafts and community engagement, landing on Al Naqda: a traditional needlework technique integral to Bahraini heritage.
Al Naqda embroidery, or Naqda for short, is an intricate technique that requires the use of a single flattened metal thread called Khoos threaded through a curved needle. The patterns and designs draw inspiration from nature, geometry and the surroundings. Originating in India and traveling to Bahrain through trade routes, Al Naqda now forms the heart of our business, making our pieces highly sought after.
As demand grew, so did our need for artisans skilled in this craft. Through extensive research, networking, and lots of trial and error, we connected with the artisans, sampling, negotiating, and building trust to foster and enable the preservation of this craft.
Our vision has always been to marry the past, present, and future. Together, we preserve and innovate within our craft, where each piece blends traditional techniques with contemporary applications.
We emphasize the handmade nature of our work, prioritizing integrity over scalability, and maintaining a boutique approach aligned with our core values. Each piece we make is a testament to artistry, dexterity, creativity and cultural heritage, offering our clientele not just a product, but the special experience of having a hand directly in the legacy of Al Naqda.
Our pieces are crafted slowly and intentionally to make sure that we don’t compromise on quality and finishing.
Our success is organic, driven by our commitment to authenticity, thoughtful intention, and the coupling of style with substance.
It brings us great pleasure to proudly present a sensational juxtaposition of hard and soft all at once, delicately handmade with love + attention in our atelier on the island of Bahrain.
